Change Filter Regularly
You should change your AC filter at least once every six months.
Clogged filters increase system pressure and restrict airflow, which makes your air conditioner less efficient and more likely to suffer a breakdown.
Make sure you use a replacement filter that has the appropriate MERV rating for your unit – you can find your air filter either right behind the return duct or next to the main air handler.
If you have a split system, your AC filter and furnace filter are one and the same.
Get a Programmable Thermostat
A programmable thermostat helps modulate AC usage and conserve energy.

Clean Coils
Your evaporator and condenser coils are crucial components that allow for heat transfer.
Dirt and grime on the coils make cooling less efficient, and can also cause your coils to frost over and leak water. You can clean your coils with a soft-bristled brush, mild detergent, and a garden hose, or you can contact an expert to clean them for you as part of an AC maintenance appointment.
Clean Drain Lines
Take the time to flush your condensate drain line with warm water and vinegar, then flush with clean water afterward. Keeping your drain lines clear will stop your system from leaking water.
Clear Ground Near Outdoor Unit
If you have an outdoor unit, make sure you keep the ground nearby clear of debris and plants.
Grass and weeds can clog the outdoor unit vents, so create at least a foot of clearance between any vegetation and the base of your outdoor unit. Ensure you remove all grass clippings after you mow your lawn!
Vacuum Frequently
One way to reduce the amount of wear and tear on your AC system is to vacuum your home frequently.
Not only does this reduce the amount of dust going through your vents, keeping clogged filters from stressing your system, but helps your AC unit improve indoor air quality and reduces allergies/respiratory irritation from dust, dirt, pollen and pet dander.
